Our Lady
of the Skies Mission Statement:
“To
create an atmosphere of welcome and acceptance in Our Father’s House in
order for all to experience the indwelling presence of
God.”
Nellis Air Force Base is
located on the northeastern edge of Las Vegas, in Clark County,
Nevada. Nellis Field opened on September 15, 1941 and became the Las Vegas
Army Airfield on April 8, 1943. At this point ,Our Lady of the Skies
Community of Faith was initiated. The Air Force, as a separate
organization, was created on December 22, 1948 and the Las Vegas Airfield
became Nellis Air Force Base. The military has always supported the
religious affiliation of it's members. The current chapel building,
which provides ecumenical use, was constructed 1968.
Between 750/800 people attend Mass
at Our Lady of the Skies on an average weekend. 400 children normally
participate in the Religious Education or Life Teen Programs, with over 55
people assisting. Approximately 200 people are actively involved in
various ministries provided by the parish.
Active duty military and their
families are the center of the mission, but because southern Nevada is a
popular military retirement area many parishioners are older retired
personnel or dependents. While both active duty and retired personnel
living in the community may attend one of the many the Catholic church in
their geographical area, many still like the camaraderie and closeness
they have experienced over the years in a base chapel and find the warmth
of a smaller group setting more conducive to worship.
